Winter Salt Week: Protecting Our Water, Roads, and Future

The City of Sheboygan Department of Public Works is proud to join communities across the country in supporting Winter Salt Week, held during the last week of January. This annual event raises awareness about the impacts of winter salt use and promotes solutions to reduce salt pollution.

While salt helps keep roads safe during winter storms, overuse can damage infrastructure and harm lakes, streams, and even drinking water. By learning best practices and making small changes, we can protect our freshwater resources without compromising safety.

Why It Matters:

  • Salt pollution threatens aquatic life and drinking water quality.
  • Excess salt corrodes roads, bridges, and vehicles—costing taxpayers more in repairs.
  • Smarter salt use saves money and safeguards the environment.

How You Can Help:

  • Clear snow early to reduce the need for salt.
  • Use only the recommended amount—more salt doesn’t mean more safety.
  • Share this message with friends and neighbors.

Last year, over 900 people from 30+ states participated in Winter Salt Week. This year, let’s help surpass 1,000 participants! Learn more and get involved at https://wintersaltweek.org/
