Notice of Sanitary Sewer Overflow in Evergreen Park

Categories: Parks & Forestry, Wastewater Treatment

The City of Sheboygan Department of Public Works reports that the Sheboygan sanitary sewer system experienced an overflow in Evergreen Park earlier this week. The overflow was first identified on Monday, December 2nd, when a resident reported an unusual sewer odor in the area. Crews responded immediately, resolving a blockage that afternoon and addressing a second obstruction downstream on Tuesday morning. The issue was caused by a buildup of grease in a section of the sanitary sewer main, leading to wastewater backup at a manhole. Crews cleared the blockage, restored normal flow, and removed wastewater from nearby low-lying areas. All recovered wastewater was transported to the wastewater treatment facility for proper disposal. Unfortunately, some of the overflow reached the Pigeon River. The affected area of the park is remote, and there has been no reported exposure to wastewater by people, pets, or wildlife.

Environmental and Public Health Impact

The affected area of Evergreen Park is remote and difficult to access, which significantly minimized the risk of direct human, pet, or wildlife exposure to the overflow. The City is actively monitoring the situation and working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to address potential environmental impacts.

Actions Taken and Ongoing Measures

  • The blocked sewer main was jetted to remove grease and restore flow.
  • Wastewater in the affected areas was vacuumed and properly disposed of at the treatment facility.
  • Environmental monitoring and mitigation efforts are ongoing, in coordination with WDNR guidelines.
  • Preventive measures, including increased inspections and public education, are being implemented

Public Awareness and Legal Compliance

As required under Wisconsin law (Chapter NR 210 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code), the City is issuing this public notice. We also remind residents to avoid pouring fats, oils, and grease down household drains, as these materials are a leading cause of sewer blockages and overflows. Proper disposal helps protect the environment and prevent incidents like this.

Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

The City of Sheboygan Department of Public Works is dedicated to safeguarding Sheboygan’s natural resources and public health and will continue to work diligently to protect them. Our team is conducting a comprehensive review of the sewer system in Evergreen Park to identify further preventive solutions.
