How to: Ash Disposal

Categories: Garbage & Recycling

Summer is here and that means enjoying the beautiful weather with grilling out and campfires!

But what should you do with an abundance of ashes from these activities? The Department of Public Works would like to provide this reminder on the proper method to dispose of excess ashes:

  • COLD ashes should be placed in double plastic bags and placed in the garbage cart. Ashes should not be discarded in the recycling carts. Never dump loose ashes in the cart which causes a lot of flying debris when the cart is emptied into the truck.
  • An environmentally responsible alternative is to use your ashes in your compost pile or place in your garden or flower beds.
  • NEVER PLACE WARM / HOT ASHES IN THE PLASTIC GARBAGE CARTS! Doing this may cause a fire either in the cart and/or the garbage trucks.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and enjoy the summer.
