Not accepted in curbside collection. 

Alkaline (Single-Use) Batteries: Never put these batteries in your recycling cart. Single use batteries (A, AA, AAA, C, D, etc.) can be thrown out in your regular garbage or can be recycled for a fee through a variety of mail in programs or local retail drop offs. Recycling these batteries through mail in or retail drop off programs can recover steel and zinc.

Rechargeable Batteries: Never put these batteries in your recycling or garbage cart. Rechargeable batteries (NiCd, NiMH, NiZn, Li-ion, SSLA/Pb) are recyclable through a variety of local retailers serving as drop-off locations. Rechargeable batteries contain toxic chemicals and must be properly disposed of through specific recycling locations instead of being placed in the garbage or recycling cart.

Vehicle Batteries: Lead-Acid batteries, typically found in cars and other vehicles, must be recycled in the state of Wisconsin. Many stores that sell these batteries accept them for recycling while offering savings on the purchase of a new one.

Accepted in curbside recycling collection. 

Instructions: Paperback books, phone books, hardcover books ONLY if cover and back is removed, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, and mixed paper. Consider donating your used books, or renting your next book or ebook.

Restrictions: No tissue paper or wax/foil/plastic lined paper or trash. If recycling a phone book, consider opting out of that service if no longer needed.

Branches, Brush, and Leaves

Grass clippings, leaves, branches, brush, and yard waste are all accepted at the Sheboygan Recycling Center on New Jersey Avenue. Free mulch is also offered to the community from the provided branches.

    Not accepted in curbside collection. 

    Instructions: Take to the Sheboygan Recycling Center on New Jersey Avenue or local scrap metal yard.

    Cell Phones

    Not accepted curbside. Cell phones are banned from Wisconsin landfills. Lithium-ion batteries that power smartphones and tablets pose a significant fire risk at our recycling facility if damaged.

    Not accepted curbside. Private garbage and recycling resources may accept drop off of chains. 

    Special

    Christmas Trees

    Pickup will begin on January 4. Trees are picked up on the same day as your garbage pickup. Trees will be picked up through the end of January.

    Instructions: Christmas trees are picked up at the curb. There is NO ALLEY pickup of Christmas trees. Christmas wreaths are picked up with normal curbside garbage collection. Residents are reminded to NOT place trees in plastic bags and remove all ornaments and decorative lights. Trees are recycled by grinding them into wood chips. These chips are available to the public free of charge. Christmas trees can also be disposed of at the Resident Drop-Off Site located at 2026 New Jersey Ave. Place your trees in the area normally used for branches.

    Restrictions: Remove all lights and decorations from the tree.

    Instructions: Household Hazardous Waste Sites will accept: garage, auto, and toxic workshop cleaners.

    Instructions: Research drop off centers that accept electronics. Most have a charge for disposal and a limit on the amount that can be dropped off in one visit.

    Restrictions: Electronics are banned from all Wisconsin landfills.

    Instructions: Consider donating items such as lawn mowers and snow blowers. Even if they are not in working condition, many people and organizations are interested. If donating is not an option, drain all fluids (oil, gasoline, etc.) and dispose of properly, then take the item to the Sheboygan Recycling Center on New Jersey avenue.

    Light Bulbs (fluorescent)

    Instructions: CFL and fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury, which is a hazardous material, and must be disposed of properly. Do NOT place fluorescent bulbs or tubes in your trash or recycling carts. CFL bulbs can be taken to many retail outlets, such as Ace, Batteries Plus Bulbs, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, Target, and True Value. Batteries Plus Bulbs accepts residential fluorescent tubes for a very small fee. Call individual stores to verify their participation. Household Hazardous Waste Sites also accept these items, but the cost of processing CFLs through this site is very costly so retail sites are preferred.

    It is illegal for needles and syringes to be put in the garbage or recycling carts/bins. Needles and syringes must be taken to a sharps collection station or check with your local pharmacy about their disposal options.

    Accepted in curbside garbage collection if fully dry. 

    Instructions: Dry paint fully in the container and ensure that not just the top layer is dry before disposing. Consider mixing in a drying agent to speed up the drying process for disposal.

    Instructions: Household Hazardous Waste Sites will accept oil-based paint. Consider donating unopened paint to charity.
